The Buteyko Institute Method
(BIM), or Buteyko as it is more commonly referred to, is a system of breathing retraining which delivers immediate and sustained
improvement for people with asthma. It is suitable for both children and adults and is effective for people with all types
and severity of asthma, emphysema and COPD. It is also effective in the treatment of sleep apneoa.
The Buteyko Institute Method
(BIM) is named after a Russian Professor, Konstantin Buteyko. He made a number of critical observations whilst training to
be a doctor, from which he developed the breathing retraining programme. The Buteyko method of breathing retraining is taught
by BIM Practitioners accredited by the Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health
(BIBH) and is effective, safe and scientifically based.
Buteyko is taught in a series
of five 90 minute sessions (including the information session). The courses are run for no more than five people at a time
and children only courses are organised on a regular basis. One to one courses are also available.
