“Yoga is not an ancient myth buried in oblivion. It is the most
valuable inheritance of the present. It is the essential need of today and the culture of tomorrow” Swami Satyananda
Saraswati
Yoga is more than thousand years old and originates from India. The Sanskrit word yoga can be translated
as union and describes the union that is created by harmonising and balancing mind body and soul.
Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh explained yoga as:”…integration and harmony between
thought, word and deed, or integration between head, heart and hand”.
Asana (postures), Pranayama (breathing techniques), Yoga Nidra or relaxation and concentration
or meditation are used to release mental, physical and emotional blockages that hinder harmony, balance and union, which are
often at the root of tensions, inflexibility, illness and unhappiness.
Yoga can be understood and practiced on many different levels:
v
to gain flexibility or regain flexibility after injuries.
v
to improve posture
v
as means of maintaining health and well-being in a stressful environment and society.
v
to recover after illness
v
as help through difficult and emotional times
v
stress management
v
as therapy for a wide variety of ailments (migraine, asthma, arthritis, digestive problems…)
Physical and mental therapy is one of the most important achievements and the success
is put down to the balance that yoga creates on the nervous and endocrine system which directly influences all other systems
and organs of the body.
But
beyond any benefits that you try to achieve yoga is about experiencing and connecting with the beauty of the true self within
and harmonizing body mind and soul
